Thomas Anderson is a programmer by day and a hacker called Neo by night. When a mysterious figure named Morpheus contacts him, Neo discovers that the world he knows is a simulated reality called the Matrix, built by machines to keep humanity docile while their bodies are harvested for energy. Given the choice between comfortable ignorance and a brutal truth, Neo takes the red pill and enters the real world, where he must learn to bend the rules of the simulation and fight an army of sentient programs called Agents. The Wachowskis’ film reinvented action cinema with its bullet-time sequences and brought cyberpunk philosophy to a mainstream audience.
